What is an implant?

Dental implants are titanium screws that are placed in the jaw bone where a tooth has been lost, a new artificial tooth (crown) is then attached to the implant, replacing a missing tooth/teeth without involving any other teeth.
Implants can be used to replace one or more teeth, or under a complete denture to give more support.
Treatment can take between 3-12 months

Benefits & purpose of an Implant

Dental implant treatment is a predictable treatment option. Research indicated over 90% survival rate over 10 years. Implants are a strong, attractive, long-term option to replace missing teeth.

Process

You will be referred to a specialist oral surgeon or periodontist to place the implant. There needs to be enough bone present to place an implant. Sometimes a bone or gum graft needs to be carried out.
The implant needs to integrate into your bone to provide good stability. The specialist will check the area has healed which normally takes around 3-6 months.
Your dentist takes a mould or 3D scan of the implant which is sent to the dental technician. A temporary crown is fitted if necessary. The dental technician makes the complete structure, with a metal base for strength and porcelain on top for appearance. Your dentist then places the crown into your mouth. An implant crown is placed either with a cement or a screw.

Risks and complications

Peri-implantitis: is a pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterized by inflammation in the gum and progressive loss of supporting bone. Un-treated this can lead to implant failure.
Fracture of the implant-crown: Implant crown are made of a metallic base and porcelain on top that can sometimes chip. Small chips can sometimes be smoothed, the crown may need to be replaced if the chip is very large or is cracked.
Failure: Approximately 3-5% of implant cases fail to “take” to the surrounding bone. If this is the case the implant will need to be removed and the site left to heal for a few months. The site will then need to be reassessed for future treatment.
Loosening of the implant due to excessive force

During treatment unforeseen conditions may be revealed that may require changes in the procedure and cost, the dentist and staff use professional judgement to perform such additional procedures that are necessary and desirable to complete the treatment.

Maintenance

Dental implants require regular maintenance.
It is essential that you maintain good homecare and keep the implant and your natural teeth clean before, during and after implant treatment.
We recommend 6 monthly visits with a hygienist to maintain the periodontal health and supporting tissues around an implant.
We recommend regular dental check-ups to check the implant, between 3-6 monthly to start.
